What Should I Choose, Shared Server or Dedicated Server?

If you have an online business with a sophisticated web site, you are probably deciding what type of server you need for your business. The server is what actually hosts your website online. It provides you space on the internet and routes traffic to your website.

When trying to decide what type of internet host you want for your website, you have two types of servers to chose from. Personal and small business websites tend to favor shared servers. Dedicated Servers are other type of server.

The advantages of using a shared server are as follows: Some of them are free. Some of them offer templates that allow you to create a website with little computer knowledge. Shared servers offer a variety of different services. Even paid shared servers are relatively inexpensive and have a variety of different plans.

The needs of small businesses and personal websites on the internet are best met by shared servers. Some shared servers, especially the free ones, will want to put mandatory ads on your website. This is how they pay for their website. Additional services let you put your own advertisements on your website, increasing the income from it.

However, shared servers are not the best optional for large businesses. For smooth traffic on your site you will require a better bandwidth. Your bandwidth may not be able to keep up with thousands of visitors a day, leaving some customers in the dark.

Additionally, for many servers that are shared there is a finite amount of space available. For large or growing internet businesses, a dedicated, dependable server is the way to go. It increases your space size and free up the bandwidth so your customers are no longer left out in the cold. This is especially important if your business has forums or shopping carts. These are called databases and tend to take up a lot of space.

Although dedicated servers cost a substantial amount more to get started then a shared server, building businesses really don’t have much of an option. If your goal is to grow your internet business, you need to select a dedicated server.

A dedicated server is more expensive that a shared one, although even at $100 a month, it will pay for itself very quickly. You will basically be hosting your own website, and will be in control over as many advertisements and business connections you want on your site. This can also bring you in extra revenue.

With your own dedicated server, there is no limit as to how you can grow your business. You can even get affiliates on your websites that relate to your business. There are all sorts of ways to make money online and most of them include advertising of some sort. With your own dedicated server, you can put all the ads on that you want and thus earn more profit on your website.

What You Should Know If You Want To Change Your Web Hosting Provider

Changing from one web host to another can become necessary if your website becomes popular and your current host can’t meet your needs for bandwidth, storage, etc. This can be especially true if your site is hosted on a free web host.

If you need to move your site, plan the move carefully. Of course, the first thing you must do is choose your new hosting company.

Once you find a new host that can satisfy all your needs, you’ll have to move your website onto the new host’s server. But before you do, make sure you back up your site from the old host.

This is a great time to consider redesigning your website if it is poorly structured and has been growing haphazardly. You might want something as simple as a new page design or you might want to redesign your site’s database and content storage.

You should use a redirect page on your old website for the first 48 hours after moving to a new web host. This will automatically forward your site’s visitors to the new location and ensure that people will see the new website even if its IP address has not yet propagated.

A new website takes approximately 48 hours to be listed on domain servers throughout the Internet, but everything should be just fine after that. A few more suggestions to ease the transition include:

1. Find out whether your new host is running on Unix or Windows and make sure it will be compatible with everything you’re moving from the old host.

2. Find out how much storage space you will need for all your files and the content that is currently on your website. Make sure that you have enough storage space on your host to allow your site room to grow.

3. Check to see what services your new host offers, and make sure anything you have been using on your current host (like autoresponders, mail forwarding, etc.) is available.

4. If your current website is created using Microsoft Frontpage, make sure your new host supports Frontpage extensions.

5. Check your new host’s policy on extra bandwidth to know where you’ll stand if your site keeps getting busier.

6. If your new host’s server is a shared server, make sure that no adult sites are hosted on the same server. Adult sites can get very busy and slow down all the other websites that are hosted on the same server.

7. Check some review sites and forums so that you can read some customer feedback about your new host before you sign up. This will give you a good indication of the type of service you can expect.

Once you have your data uploaded to your new host, test your site to make sure it’s working properly. You should be able to preview your site before you fully switch your domain name to the new address.

Collateral Benefits of Search Engine Optimization

In business, many clients overlook the real results that they’re getting during Search Engine Marketing.

They often only look at the selected keyword phrases that they are paying for, without fully realizing what other residual effects they are receiving.

During a site’s optimization, it is transformed into a properly conceived and easily navigable document. It is a patter that is sought out by the search engine spiders. If your site is easier to index, you will find that your rankings become much better!

W3C validation is always going to be important, and as such any website should want to reach it. One thing that it won’t help with however, is the rankings. Yahoo does not care about the validation so long as it has good content. This is what will keep your page at the top.

Properly naming page titles and file names is also quite important, and it helps the spider out immensely during the indexing. Google doesn’t place much value on meta tags, at least not like it used to, but they’re still a huge part of the picture. That being the case, don’t exclude them.

When you’ve finished coding the site, and done it right, then Search Engine Marketing finally comes into play. By doing this you are ensuring the traffic to your site will be increased, and there are a number of different ways that you can do this. For instance you could use articles, you could use press releases, blogs, just about anything.

There are a few other benefits that you should know about, especially when it comes to Search Engine Marketing. When you create press releases regarding a widget that you sell, you create Inbound Links to that area of your site. If you listed off all of the colors, then you have something different happening. All of those colors will have IBL’s of their own, guaranteeing you even more traffic.

There is yet another demonstration of this which is keywords and phrases that you didn’t actually target. When your site talks about different ways to use widgets, as well as their colors, then there are many different phrases being used on your site that you can now be ranked on.

So you’ve now seen a bit of what your website can do when it is properly optimized. Done properly, each page will have a rank, and that rank will drive more traffic to your website.

Even your contact/about page is critical because if you have a brick-and-mortar business, by listing your street address, you help the search engines geo target your site. Most search engines are already trying to focus your search results regionally. While it’s not a major factor yet, it is something to be aware of.

When you check Google to see where your site ranks, remember all of the hidden keywords that you may have included. It’s amazing how often these will bring you right to the top of the search engine rankings. Right were you belong!
